Apply For A Business License Huntsville, Alabama

General Information

For anyone doing business in Huntsville, the City of Huntsville Business License must first be completed through either the City of Huntsville Clerk-Treasurer’s Department or it can be downloaded online and mailed. Also, you will need to submit the appropriate license fees and the Tax Return form (Construction trades and Insurance companies have separate tax forms).  

How do I apply for a license?

You can aply online or you can mail in your applications to:

What information is needed to complete the applications?

You will need the following:

  • Taxpayer name
  • Business trade name
  • Home address in Huntsville
  • Description of business activity
  • Square footage of business/residence
  • Name of business and owner(s) and contact information
  • Knowledge of the nature of business, products sold, and employees
  • Form of ownership (sole proprietorship, partnership, LLC, LLP, corporation, private corporation, professional association, etc.)
  • Mailing and physical address for business
  • Federal Taxpayer ID number
  • Date business scheduled to begin in Huntsville
  • Type of product
  • Estimated annual gross receipts

What is the cost of the license?

Business licenses are good from January 1 to the end of the calendar year. If you submit your application after July 1, the fee will be 50% of the annual fee. All licenses have different fees based on their annual gross receipts. Are there any other requirements?

Yes. You will need approvals and to be in compliance with zoning regulations and any inspections that will need to be completed before business can be transacted in Huntsville. Here are the departments that should be contacted:

  • Finance Department (256) 427-5070 for gasoline, lodging, rental, liquor, wine, and sales and use tax compliance
  • Fire Marshal’s Office (256) 427-7401 for fire and safety compliance
  • Planning Department (256) 427-5100  for zoning compliance
