Some businesses may require health permits, or alcohol permits, you may need to have police department approval or fire and safety inspections and approval. What is the process for obtaining a business license in Fontana, CA?

If you plan to conduct business in the City of Fontana, or if you plan to purchase an existing business or relocate your established business, you will need to apply for a business license. You can fill out and print the application from the City of Fontana website, or you can request one from the Fontana Business License office at 8353 Sierra Ave, Fontana, CA 92335. Before you apply for a business license, or purchase or lease any property, you will need to contact the Planning Division to be sure your proposed business property is acceptable for the business you wish to conduct. The Planning Division can be reached at (909) 350-6718.

The next step is to apply for your Fontana business license. Your Fontana business license application consists of sections that will need to be filled out completely and accurately.  The information you will need to submit includes your business name, and physical address. Your Fontana business contact information including phone, fax and email and/or website. If your business is located within the city of Fontana, you will need to provide the following information: what the previous use for the property was, whether the use of your building will include hazardous or flammable materials, whether you operate more than one business at the location, and whether you are the current owner of the business property. 

Regardless of if you are located within the city limits, you will need to describe the exact nature of your business, and your ownership information. Ownership information includes whether you are the sole proprietor, if you are part of a corporation, a partnership, LLC or trust. Depending on what the ownership type is, you may need to have additional information such as federal and/or state tax ID numbers, seller’s permits, contractor’s license, etc. You must submit the names of additional owners, current contact information, valid driver’s license numbers, birth dates and social security numbers. 

You will need to estimate your annual gross receipts, calculate your gross receipts tax rate, and state the number of employees you plan to hire. Emergency contact information from two separate sources is needed. You will have a series of signatures and check-boxes that will need to be filled in after printing the application. 

Once your application is completed, printed, signed and checked, you will return your application to Business Services Division. There, they will review your application and forward it on to the Planning Division for review of zoning requirements. If it is approved, it will then be sent to the Building & Safety Division for on-site inspections of your proposed business location. If you are found to be in compliance with all safety and building regulations, it will be handed in to the Business License Division to complete processing. If there is any issues during the process, you will need to address them immediately. After all inspections and approvals are met, you will be issued your business license, which could be within two to three weeks, depending on what type of business you are planning to conduct.

What fees can you expect to incur?

All business licenses will be subject to an initial fee and a renewal fee annually. You will also pay an Annual Business Tax, which will be calculated based on your estimated annual gross receipts. If your business does require other permits, you may be subjected to additional fees.  Contact the Customer Service at (909) 350-7675 to have your fees calculated and to determine if you will be required to pay additional fees.
