What information will be required to complete the application for the Fort Collins sales and use tax license?

When you receive your sales and use tax application, you will need to have information on yourself and your Fort Collins business to complete the application. The information needed includes the name of all owners and/or officers of your business, their home phone number, address, and date of birth. You need to declare the ownership of your business, meaning whether it is owned by a corporation, a partnership, or a single owner. What is the process for obtaining a Fort Collins home occupation permit?

The home occupation permit is available from the City of Fort Collins Zoning Office or from the City of Fort Collins website. The home occupation permit application contains restrictions and regulations that are associated with home occupation operation. These restrictions are based on Article 3.8.3 of the Land Use Code of the City of Fort Collins and include conditions such as not using more than one-half of your total floor space of your home to conduct your business; that you will not conduct any business outside of your home or hire more than one additional co-worker;  that there will be no generation of any excessive noise, smoke, dust, odor etc. There are eleven total requirements that you will be responsible for complying with in order to obtain and maintain a home occupation permit in Fort Collins. You will need to provide a signature on your application denoting that you are familiar and in agreement with all regulations associated with the home occupation permit. You will need to have zoning approval for your home occupation, and in addition, you will need to be certain that your residential area does not have covenants that might prohibit home occupation in your area. Contact the Larimer County Clerk and Recording office at (970) 498-7860 to determine if your area is cleared of covenants for home occupations.

Generally, there are licenses for selling liquor, for handling food, for tax ID purposes, etc. The Sales and Use Tax Office can assist you in determining which, if any, licenses and/or permits you may need before your business commences.

For a home occupation permit, you will remit a fee.
