To operate a business in Skokie, you will need to have a certificate of occupancy from the Building Division and a business license from the Village Manager. You may download the application for a certificate of occupancy from the Village of Skokie website or request one in person by visiting the Building Division at 5127 Oakton Street on the main floor of the Village Hall.   3. Number of vending and amusement machines, if applicable

  8. Number of full-time and part-time employees
  9. Number of employees on site when fully staffed
  10. Name, email, home address, day and evening phone number for primary business contact
  11. Name, daytime and evening phone number, home and email address for three alternative business contacts who are authorized to be contacted on behalf of the business in the event of an emergency
  12. Name, physical address, mailing address, and all phone numbers for business
  13. Type of application (moving location, new owner, new business)
  14. Number of parking spaces on site of business location
  15. Square footage of business location
  16. Signature of business owner and property owner
  17. Date that you plan to open your business

Do you plan to operate a home-based business in Skokie?

There is no license or certificate of occupancy required for those that plan to use their home as a location for a business. However, there are certain conditions and regulations that you will need to be in compliance with in order to operate your business. These regulations are available by contacting the Building and Zoning Division at (847) 933-8223.

What is the process for approving a certificate of occupancy application for the Village of Skokie?

You will need to have a floor plan for your business, a complete application, and the signature of both the business owner as well as the property owner upon submitting your certificate of occupancy application. When you submit your application, it is forwarded through the Building and Zoning staff to be sure that all zoning regulations are met including use of building and parking requirements. If all zoning requirements are met or not, you will be notified within ten business days. If all requirements are in order, you will then set up inspections of your business location. Inspections are arranged through the Building Division by calling (847) 933-8223. If your business location passes both interior and exterior inspections, you will be issued a certificate of occupancy. If you have not passed your inspections, you will need to correct any violations and arrange for another inspection.

What other information should you know about obtaining a certificate of occupancy and business license in Skokie?

Your business license expires each year on April 30. Generally, the Village Manager mails out reminders for renewal three weeks prior to your license expiration. However, not receiving a reminder does not excuse you from renewing your license annually. Fees for certificate of occupancy are based on the square footage and area of your business location. Fees for your business license are based on the type of business.
