Where can I find information on obtaining a business license in Charlotte, North Carolina?

You will need a business license to operate a business in the City of Charlotte which is issued by the City-County Tax Collector. You may download the application for a business license from the City of Charlotte website. If you wish to fill out an application in person, you may visit the City Tax Collector’s Office at 700 North Tryon Street in Charlotte between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. What about zoning regulations and other permits and licenses?

You may be required to contact any number of permits and/or licenses to be in compliance with local, state, and federal requirements for running a business. You will very likely be required to obtain a zoning approval from the Zoning Department for your business location. What information will I need to complete my Charlotte business license application?

You will need to provide all contact information for yourself and for your business. You will need to include cell phones, email addresses, and any fax numbers. A physical address and a mailing address are both needed for your business and you will need to declare a DBA (doing business as) name. A brief description of your business activities will need to be given, a start date for your business, your application type, and your business ownership type (sole proprietor, corporation or a partnership). If you are involved in a partnership, you will need to give the name(s) of other business owners. You may choose to include your social security number and your federal tax ID number. Be sure to include information about any other businesses that you are operating in Charlotte. You will have a section of tax information that will be included for your business license application. This section will be used to determine your business license costs.

When you have completed both pages of your business license application, you will sign and date it to certify that all the information that you have provided is true and accurate to the best of your knowledge. After signing and dating your completed application, you will return it to the the City-County Tax Collector’s Office by mail to PO Box 32728, Charlotte, NC 28232-2728 or in person to 700 North Tryon Street in Charlotte.
