How do I apply for a marriage license in New York, New York?

In New York State, marriage licenses are issued by City and Town Clerk’s offices. You may go to any City Clerk’s office and apply for a marriage license that will be valid anywhere in the state. The New York City Clerk’s office has offices in each of the five boroughs. The Manhattan office is located at 141 Worth Street. The Bronx office is located in the Supreme Court Building at 851 Grand Concourse, Room B131. The Brooklyn office is located at Brooklyn Municipal Building at 210 Joralemon Street in Room 205. The Queens office is located in Borough Hall Building at 120-55 Queens Boulevard, Ground Floor, Room X001. Office hours for all locations are 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., except for the Manhattan office, which closes at 3:45 p.m.

Can I submit my marriage license application online?

You may begin your marriage license application online at New York Marriage License. However, even if you submit a marriage license application online, you will still need to visit one of the locations of the City Clerk’s office to sign and pick up your marriage license. You and the person that you are marrying must appear at the City Clerk’s office together in person.

What legal requirements do I need to meet to receive a marriage license in New York, New York?

To receive a marriage license, you and the person that you are marrying must appear together at the City Clerk’s office, fill out the marriage license application, and present a valid form of photo I.D. You must be at least 18 years of age to receive a marriage license without parental consent.

Are there additional requirements that I need to meet if I have been married before?

As part of your marriage license application, you will be asked to provide information about any previous marriages, such as the full name of your former spouse and the date of death or divorce. You may also be asked to present the divorce decree at the City Clerk’s office.

Do I need to have a blood test to be issued a marriage license in New York, New York?

No. You do not have to have a blood test to apply for a marriage license in the state of New York.

What is the marriage license fee in New York City?

The marriage license fee is $35.00. The fee may be paid by money order or by credit card.  

What is the waiting period before the marriage license is valid?

Your marriage license becomes valid after a waiting period of 24 hours after the exact time that the license is issued.

When does a New York City marriage license expire?

Your New York City marriage license expires 60 days after the day that the license is issued. If you or the person that you are marrying is active military, your marriage license expires 180 days after the day that the license is issued by the City Clerk’s office.
