In Virginia, there are state governed licensing boards that oversee the issuance of specialized licensing for occupations like engineers, real estate agents, attorneys, and physicians with many more. The professions demand specified education and the successful completion of certain examinations. Moreover, there is not just one “standard” business license that is state-granted, but there are many more business licenses that are issued at the local levels that may be more generalized. In cities, towns and counties alike the business license is commonly referred to as the Business License Tax and is a way to simultaneously assess tax and give permission to operate business in their area. There is not a residency requirement to be able to be wed in Virginia. Yet, if you are coming from out of state you must apply for your marriage license in the town or city where the ceremony will be solemnized. The wedding must be officiated over by a religious leader or a specified civil servant with the authority to do so. If either you or your spouse-to-be is a resident, you may apply at any Clerk of the Circuit Court. Both of you, the bride and groom, must be at least 16 years of age (with parental consent can be wed) or 18 years of age or older.
