What do you need to do to obtain a business license in Tempe, Arizona?

You will need a Privilege and Use Tax license from the Tax and License Division.  Depending on your business activities, you may also need to choose a regulatory license application that suits your business from a list on the City of Tempe website.  You may also contact the Tax and License Division at (480) 350-2955 for information in the various types of regulatory business license applications that are available. 

What do you need to know?

Generally, each application for a regulatory license will accompany a privilege and use tax application from the City of Tempe.  The privilege and tax application is available online to be filled in and printed. You will provide information on your business, your business activities and all owners of your business on your application.  The key information that you will find on the Privilege and Use Tax license application, includes the following:

  1. Type of business (contractor, bar/food establishment, wholesaler, property rental, etc.)
  2. Information for a property manager or landlord if you do not own your business location
  3. Ownership information (sole proprietor, LLC, partnership, corporation)
  4. Owner(s) name, contact information and social security number
  5. Name and contact information of bookkeeper
  6. Business name
  7. Physical address of business
  8. Mailing address of business
  9. Start date of business
  10. Email address of business
  11. If applicable, a state license number and federal ID number
  12. Type of license you are applying for (new business, existing business, location or name change)
  13. Name of former business owner
  14. Signature to state that you have provided only true and complete information on your application, and that you will pay any fees and/or taxes in a timely manner

You should be aware that you could be legally responsible for any back taxes or fees from the previous owner of your business.  It is recommended that you are certain all fees and taxes are up to date. 

In addition to Tempe regulatory business licenses and a Privilege and Use Tax license, if you are the sole owner of your business, you will be required to submit proof of your legal United States citizenship.  You can use documents such as a US birth certificate, a valid driver’s license, a certificate of Indian blood, etc.  Any one of the twelve separate documents will be considered sufficient proof of legal United States citizenship.  You will need to submit a copy of this document at the time that you return your license applications. 

You may be required to submit fingerprints for background checks if you plan to conduct certain business activities, and you should plan for the time it will take to process your background check prior to opening your business.

If you plan to operate certain Tempe businesses, you may be responsible for contacting separate agencies such as the IRS, the Arizona Revenue Department, the health department, etc., to apply for additional permits or licenses.
