Apply For A Tennessee Marriage License

Where do we apply for a marriage license in Tennessee?

Marriage licenses are obtained from the County Clerk’s office in any of Tennessee’s counties. Some counties, such as Knox County and Sevier County, now allow you to apply online but you and your fiance will still need to go to the County Clerk’s office in person to sign and formally submit the application. After paying the application fee, your license will be issued to you and can be used anywhere in the state of Tennessee.

What information does the marriage license application ask for?

The actual Tennessee marriage license application may vary depending on the county you apply in. But generally you will need to provide the following information:

• Full name
• Resident state and address
• Date of birth
• City and State of birth
• Father’s name and state of birth
• Mother’s maiden name and state of birth
• Social security number

You will also need to provide details about any previous marriages you have had, such as the total number and when they ended. Some counties may also ask you to state your race and highest level of education received. Both the bride and groom will need to provide identification proving the information you have stated on your application, such as a certified birth certificate or driver’s license. If either applicant is under the age of 18, there are special additional requirements for them that can be explained by contacting your local County Clerk’s office.

How much does a marriage license fee cost in Tennessee?

In Tennessee, the license fee depends on your state of residency and the county where you apply for your license. Normally, the cost for a license is the same for residents and nonresidents of Tennessee, but if the area where you plan to marry and obtain your license from is a specially declared tourism area, such as Sevier County, the license fee may be lower for non-residents. Tennessee also has a special program available only for Tennessee residents where if you and your fiance complete a certified premarital counseling session and have notarized proof of that, you can qualify for a greatly reduced fee for your marriage license. But unless you qualify for one of these programs, the cost of the license is usually around $100, but with the premarital counseling discount it will usually be around $60.

How long is the marriage license good for in Tennesee?

The marriage license is good in Tennessee for 30 days after it is issued. Once those 30 days pass, if the license is still unused it expires and is no longer legally valid.
